Leaf litter is not decoration

Leaf litter also helps moderate the surface environment. It slows evaporation, creates shelter for mancae, and gives the enclosure that lived-in forest floor quality isopods actually use. Oak and magnolia are popular choices because they break down well and last a decent amount of time.

Add hides too, but do not overthink them. Cork bark, seed pods, and bits of wood work well. Protein is one of those areas where the hobby gets opinionated fast. Some species seem to crave it more than others, and breeding colonies often put it to good use. But overfeeding rich foods in a poorly ventilated enclosure can foul the setup quickly. It depends on your colony's appetite and how fast leftovers disappear.

Once the enclosure is built, resist the urge to constantly renovate it. Add your isopods gently, place them near cover, and let them settle. The first few weeks are about observation. Check whether the moist side stays moist instead of drenched. Make sure the dry side is not becoming bone dry. Look for normal activity under hides and leaf litter rather than expecting them to parade around on command.
